The Super Bowl is the championship game in the NFL. There have been a total of 57 Super Bowls, the very first being played in 1967. The teams involved and the competition level of the game is never the same. An interesting way to analyze the historical Super Bowl games is to look at the score of the winning team. All the scores for the winning team at the Super Bowl can be seen in the graph above.

The record for the highest score for a winning team was set by the San Francisco 49ers in 1990 by scoring 55 points. They were playing the Denver Broncos who only scored 10 points in the game. The record for the lowest score for a winning team was set by the New England Patriots in 2019 by winning while only scoring 13 points. They were playing the Los Angeles Rams, who only managed to score 3 points during the game. This data means that the range of scores for winning team has a 42 point spread, which is pretty wide.

The x-axis (horizontal part of the graph) shows the year (in chronological order) the Super Bowl was played (1967 – 2023), not the year the season took place. The y-axis (vertical part of the graph) shows the score of the winning team (0 – 55). Every bar represents the amount of points the winning team scores in that Super Bowl. The two gray dashed lines highlight the records for the highest score (55) and lowest score (13). The graph does not have a clear distinct pattern. There seems to be quite a bit variation in those scores through the years. Super Bowl: the National Football League championship game, played annually between the champions of the National and the American Football Conferences.
