Super Bowl Margin of Victory graph

Super Bowl ~ Margin of Victory

Sports Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is the championship game in the NFL. It is suppose to be between the two best teams in the league. It is suppose to be a highly completive game. But sometimes that doesn’t happen. Some years are far more competitive than others. The graph above shows every margin of victory at the Super Bowl in chronological order.

The game with the highest margin of victory (45 pts), and arguable the least competitive, happened in 1990. The 49ers completely crushed the Broncos 55 to 10. I wonder if it is better to not make the Super Bowl, or make it and be completely destroyed by the other team. Anyway, the very next year, the record for the smallest margin of victory (1 pt) was set. The Giants just barely beat the Bills 20 to 19. The margins of victory are quite varied and all the details can be seen in the graph above.

Super Bowl Margin of Victory Graph Notes:

The x-axis (horizontal part of the graph) shows the year (in chronological order) the Super Bowl was played (1967 – 2023), not the year the season took place. The y-axis (vertical part of the graph) shows the margin of victory (how many points the winning team won by). Every bar represents the margin of victory for that year’s Super Bowl game. The two gray dashed lines highlight the records for the largest margin (45) and lowest margin (1) of victory for the winning team. The graph does not have a clear distinct pattern. There seems to be quite a bit variation in those scores through out the years. Although not a perfect example, this graph has na normal bell curve look.  Super Bowl: the National Football League championship game, played annually between the champions of the National and the American Football Conferences.
