March Madness is a college basketball tournament to determine the national champions. Each team that qualifies is giving a seed at the start of the tournament. The “seed” is the raking of the team, 1 being the best, and 16th the worst. The graph above shows the combined seed of the two teams competing in the championship game of the men’s March Madness tournament. The tournament first started in 1939, but the graph starts in 1985 when the tournament expanded to 64 teams.

The 2014 tournament had the highest combined seed of any championship game. No 7 seed UConn competed against, and beat No 7 seed Kentucky during game. The combined seed being a record setting 15.

The 2011 tournament had the second highest combined seed at 11. The game was between UConn, No 3 seed, and Butler, No 8 seed. UConn won.

The x-axis (horizontal part of the graph) shows the year the game took place. The y-axis (vertical part of the graph) shows the combined seed total. Each bar represents the combined total of the two teams in the championship game of the men’s March Madness tournament. March Madness: The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, is a single-elimination tournament played every March in the United States. It currently features 68 college basketball teams from the Division 1 level of the NCAA, to determine the national champion.
