Jane Austen published her second novel Pride & Prejudice in 1813. The story focuses on the lives of the Bennet family and their neighbors living in the English countryside. It’s a story of relationships more than a story of huge events. To put those relationships in better perspective it is good to be aware of the characters’ ages. The above graph shows the ages for each main character in Pride & Prejudice.
The youngest character is Miss Lydia Bennet at age 15. The oldest character (in this list) is Mr. Darcy at age 28. The book has other minor characters who are older than Darcy, but he has the oldest age that is mentioned to the readers. He is also the oldest of the main characters. For example, Mr and Mrs Bennet are 100% older than Darcy, but their ages are never stated in the book, and the are minor characters in the novel.
In the story, Darcy and Bingley are best friends. It is interesting to note that Darcy is 5 years older than Bingley. It’s interesting because in the story Bingely listens to Darcy arguably more than he should. But the age gap might help to explain why Bingley is so willing to take Darcy’s advice. Even when it goes against his better judgment.
