Masters ~ Distribution of Winning Margins

Masters Sports

The Masters Tournament is held every year at the Augusta National Golf Club. Although the location is the same every year, no two years are alike in terms of weather or competition. A fun way to look at the results is to compare the margin of victory (how many strokes the first place golfer won by). The graph above shows distribution of winning margins at the Masters.

By looking at the graph you can tell how rare each winning margin is. Winning by one stroke is the most common result of the tournament. That has happened 24 times. Winning by two strokes has happened 18 times. Winning by three strokes has happened 10 times. Winning by four strokes has happened 6 times. Winning by five strokes has happened 4 times. Winning by 6,7, 8, 9. or 12 strokes has only happened once.

In summary the most common amount of strokes to win by are 0, 1, or 2. The least common is anything larger than 5 strokes.

That 12 stroke win belongs to Tiger Woods for his insane 1997 victory.
