March Madness is a college basketball tournament to determine the national champions. Each team that qualifies is giving a seed at the start of the tournament. The “seed” is the raking of the team, 1 being the best, and 16th the worst. The graph above shows the seed of the men’s March Madness winning team. The tournament first started in 1939, but the graph starts in 1985 when the tournament expanded to 64 teams.
The highest seeded team to win the tournament during this time span was Villanova, No 8 seed, during their 1985 win.
The second highest team to win was UConn during their 2014 team as a 7 seeded team.
The third highest team was Kansas, No 6 seed, in 1998.
The majority of tournaments are won by No 1 seeded teams. During this time period a No 1 seeded team has won 64% of the time.
