The first Harry Potter book was published in 1997, and six more books soon followed. Because of the success of the novels, 8 movies were made. The seven books had a wide range of lengths. But the movies were all about the same. The comparison between the Harry Potter movie and book lengths can be seen in the graph above.
“Deathly Hallows” was made into two movies, but not because it is the longest book, but because it has the last of the franchise. “Order of the Phoenix” was the longest book, but somehow got the shortest movie. Overall this graph shows that although the book lengths changed a lot, the movie lengths all stayed about the same. The books were so long, that it’s a shame that more of the books didn’t have multiple movies. Maybe one day these books will be remade into a tv series.
Harry Potter Movie vs Book Lengths Graph Notes:
The x-axis (horizontal part of the graph) shows the book length in pages. The y-axis (vertical part of the graph) shows the movie length in minutes. The orange dots represent each Harry Potter story, and sits on a plan for its value on the x- axis (book length) and y-axis (movie lengths). This type of plot is called a scatter plot. *Harry Potter: Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by J. K. Rowling.
