The Great Lakes ~ Shipwrecks

Great Lakes Natural Science

The Great Lakes are 5 interconnect fresh water lakes in North America. The lakes, Eire, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Superior, have shorelines in Canada and/or in the USA. Boats have been using the The Great Lakes for hundreds of years. The sad reality is that many ships never made it to their destination, and now reside on the lake floors. The above graph shows the approximate numbers of shipwrecks in each of the Great Lakes.

Lake Erie has claimed the most ships, with approximately 2,000 shipwrecks in its waters. Lake Michigan has the second most with 1500 shipwrecks. Huron and Superior are tied for third with 1000. Ontario is in last with only about 200 shipwrecks. All of this information can be seen in the graph above.

These numbers are approximations, because the exact number of shipwrecks in the Great Lakes is near impossible to know.
