Super Bowl ~ Historical Viewership

Sports Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is an American tradition that started in the late 60s. Families and friends gather to each junk food and drink while watching professional athlets compete in the biggest game in football. For many people the teams in the game does not factor into whether or not they will be watching. It’s the event that is celebrated more than the details, like who is playing or where the game is being played. But how popular is this American event, and how has that popularity changed? The above graph shows the viewership for the Super Bowl from the first game in 1967, to the most recent game in 2023. (It is important to note that this data is based on US TV viewership numbers.)

Super Bowl II played in 1968 holds the record for having the smallest amount of viewers with 39 million. That viewership steadily increased till its peak in 2015 when 114 million tuned into the Super Bowl game. These numbers are based on US TV viewership. So although it seems like game is getting less popular, the decrease in could be because more people are watching from a streaming service.
