Pride & Prejudice is a classic novel written by Jane Austin in 1813. It is a beloved story of Elizabeth Bennet and her relationship with her family and neighbors. An interesting way to analyze the novel is by looking at the word choice. This post is going to look at the verb usage. The graph above shows the most used verbs from the Pride & Prejudice.
Said, takes the top spot as the most used verb. This makes sense because there is so much dialogue in the text. Some interesting words that also make this list are: see, saw, seen, looked, hear, heard, believed, and tell. These words are all used when describing interactions with or about other people. Again this makes sense, because Pride & Prejudice is a story about 18th century England, where everything people did in public was critiqued and commented on.
The last word to make the list is marriage. Four couples end up getting married throughout the course of the novel. So not a huge surprise to see this word make the list. But at the same time, would not have guessed that marriage was used 61 times in the text.
