The very first Harry Potter novel was published by JK Rowling in 1997. The final book of the series come out 10 years later in 2007. The novels first become popular in the UK but quickly found worldwide success. With the success of the books, movies were bound to happen. Part of the appeal of the novels was the extremely detailed descriptions of the wizarding world. Replicating that in a film would not be easy or cheap. The graph above shows the budget and ticket sales of each Harry Potter film.
The Harry Potter movies cost a lot of money to make. The most expensive movie was “The Half-Blood Prince”, which had a 250 million dollar budget. The “cheapest” was the “Chamber of Secrets” which had a 100 million dollar budget. All together these movies cost a little over a billion dollars. Although the movies cost an insane amount to make, it’s pennies compared to the profits.
The movies made a lot of money. A lot a lot. Deathly Hallows Part 2 made 1.3 billion dollars alone. The profit from this one movie, made enough to cover the budget of all seven.
