The number of kids that each British monarch had, can be seen in the graph above. Throughout British history, the number of children born to monarchs has varied greatly. Some monarchs had large families with many children. While others had only a few or even none at all.
King Edward I had 19 legitimate children, the most out of any monarch. He was married to Elenor of Castile (16 kids) and after her death remarried Margaret of France (3 kids).
The monarch with the second most children was King George III, who had 15 children with his wife Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
Fan favorite King Henry VIII, who had six wives only had a total of three legitimate children. His first wife, Catherine of Aragon, bore him one daughter, Mary I. His second wife, Anne Boleyn, gave birth to one daughter, Elizabeth I. While his third wife, Jane Seymour, finally provided him with a male heir, Edward VI.
However, there were also many monarchs who had no children at all, either because they were unable to conceive or because they had no spouses. For example, Queen Elizabeth I, known as the “Virgin Queen,” famously never married or had children, while King William IV had no legitimate heirs.
In modern times, Queen Elizabeth II has four children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward. Her son King Charles, has two children. Prince William and Prince Harry.
In conclusion, the number of children born to British monarchs has varied widely throughout history, with some monarchs having large families and others having none. Nevertheless, the line of succession to the British throne has always been carefully managed to ensure the continuity of the monarchy.
