There are 8 planets in the our solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Pluto was classified as a planet prior to 2006, but now is considered a “dwarf planet”. The graph above shows the size of all the planets (plus Pluto!) in our solar system. They are listed in order of their distance from the sun.
The planets seem to fit into three categories in regards to size: small, medium and large. Unfortunately Earth falls into the small category. Jupiter on the other hand, is the papa bear of the group with a diameter 11x bigger than Earth.
Planets Size Graph Notes:
The x-axis (horizontal part of the graph) shows the planet name in order from the sun ~ Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. The y-axis (vertical part of the graph) shows the planets diameter in miles. Diameter: the part of a circle that is a straight line segment that passes through the centre of the circle and whose endpoints lie on the circle. Dwarf planets: a celestial body resembling a small planet but lacking certain technical criteria that are required for it to be classed as such.
