Masters ~ First Place Prize Money

Masters Sports

The Masters is a highly competitive golf tournament that has been held annually since 1934. A total of 84 tournaments have been played since. There has always been prize money for the tournaments, but the amount has changed quite a bit over the years. The graph above shows the first place prize money at the Masters from the first tournament in 1934 till the most recent in 2020.

Talk about exponential growth. Wow. At the first Masters in 1934 the winner got $1,500. The prize money stayed about the same for many years, but eventually it did start to increase. In 2020 the winner got a little over $2 million dollars. It is important to note that the increase is not just due to inflations. $1,500 in 1934 is equivalent to $30,000 in 2020. It is much more lucrative to win the Masters now than it was when the tournament was first founded.

Masters First Place Prize Money Graph Notes:

The x-axis (horizontal part of the graph) shows the year the tournament took place. The y-axis (vertical part of the graph) shows the prize money in American dollars. Every bar represents the first place prize money for the year the Masters took place. Looking at the graph, it’s clear that for about the first 40 years the prize money did not change a lot, and it was not that high. In more recent years the prize money is now very large and it keeps growing. The graph is a good example of exponential growth.Masters Tournament: One of the four major championships in professional golf. Usually takes place in the first full week of April. The Masters is the first major of the year, and is always held at the same location, Augusta National Golf Club, a private course in Augusta, Georgia.
